In our Key Forensics Laboratory, we provide evidence collection services and in-lab examination of the collected sample.
Our process begins with the careful collection of keys from crime scenes. It involves systematic documentation of the key's location, condition, and any associated environmental factors, essential for subsequent laboratory analysis.
In the laboratory, our forensic experts use a variety of techniques to examine keys recovered from crime scenes, including microscopic examination for the detection of trace elements such as DNA, hair, fibers, wear and tear marks, tool marks, impressions, etc. on the keys.
We also do comparative analysis of keys recovered from crime scenes with known samples to establish connections or exclusions following ethical considerations to ensure the accuracy and reliability of findings for legal proceedings.
By combining in-lab expertise with onsite evidence collection, we provide invaluable support to law enforcement, investigators, and legal professionals to solve mysteries surrounding physical key evidence.
Determining the Originality of Keys: This process focuses on distinguishing whether the keys are original or duplicates not issued by the manufacturer. The examination involves checking for wear and tear, tool marks, and assessing the metal quality used in manufacturing the keys. Additionally, verification may be sought from the manufacturing company.
Checking the Usage of the Key: This involves determining the approximate usage of keys in terms of days, months, or years by the user of the vehicle. It is done by identifying striation marks formed on the key surface due to repeated insertions into the door and ignition lock.
Matching Different Keys: This involves identifying similarities or dissimilarities among keys to ascertain whether they belong to the same lock. The examination includes examining blade patterns, the number of grooves, and other key characteristics for comparison.
Digital Pocket Scale: It is a compact digital measuring scale designed for weighing keys.
Digital Vernier Calipers:They consist of a main scale and a sliding vernier scale and are used in laboratories to measure the width, breadth, length, and other dimensions of keys.
Digital Screw Gauge: This digital tool is used for accurately measuring the length and width of the bow and the width of the shoulder of keys.
Comparison Microscope: It combines two compound microscopes into one unit and allows for a side-by-side comparison of two specimens to check for striations or wear and tear marks.
Miscope:It is a small, portable microscope used to examine minute striation marks and other intentional or unintentional marks that may not be visible to the naked eye. It also has an attached camera for capturing images for documentation.
